BlackBerry wins the business smartphone niche hands down. But that may actually be a bad thing from the lets-be-a-great-cameraphone standpoint. Aimed mostly at business users, it's not clear upfront that the BlackBerry cameras are intended to perform. Indeed, much like the iphone, the emphasis is on taking a quick picture and being able to share/upload it easily rather than being able to take great ones that can compare with dedicated counterparts.

At least the 2MP camera on models like the Bold and Pearl feature a 5x zoom, but that's sadly only digital. Also, unlike the iphone, you can record video, and it's quite easy to get it up to youtube. Sadly, the model that has the best camera that BlackBerry has to offer (the Tour) - at 3.2 MP and auto focus - does not have WiFi, so if are keen on doing a lot of facebook photosharing, you have to be on a 3G plan.

The Tour is certainly an improvement over the Pearl (and all other models that have the 2MP camera) - built in image stabilization is something that you're going to be grateful for, not to mention a better flash. The difference in picture quality between the models is stark and will be evident even to the naked eye. However, the 8220 model has pretty good wifi (although it's a 2MP camera), so if connectivity is your killer feature you may want to pass up on the model with the better camera. It's a pity there isn't a handset that ropes in everything together.

Make sure you stay abreast with the latest firmware upgrades. The early commercial software that was bundled with the 8300's, for instance, was reported to have problems with white-balance in broad daylight, but has been better since with updates. These cameras don't compare too well with the Nokia/Samsung/Sony models, but if a smartphone is what you are looking for, then these models are somewhat in the spirit of a iphone. The Tour is what you want, if you are looking for half-decent camera on your BlackBerry.
