Motorola handsets are popular for their razor thin looks and their early adapation of technologies like bluetooth - remains to be seen how far ahead they manage to stay in the camera zone. Unlike Sony and Samsung, Motorola isn't a manufacturer of standalone digital cameras. But in case you are wondering if this is a downer for their camera phone business, think again. In June last year, Motorola tied up with Kodak to come out with the MotoZone ZN5 camera phone, you knew that Motorola certainly meant serious business with the camera component of its camera phones.

The MotoZone was certainly as much a camera as a phone - featuring a Xenon flash and 5 Megapixels of Kodak imaging power, this comes with all the goodies. There's a panorama feature that's completely trivial to use, a lens cap which when slid sideways turns the camera on, a fast autofocus, and all the goodness of the Kodak Gallery service. Ironically, the panorama feature is missing from many of Kodak's standalone cameras! Fact that this has WiFi capabilities to boot, sharing is a spree, and this seems to give you the relevant features of a smartphone without the bulk of it.

On the downside, Motorola has suffered several instances of delays with camera phone releases in the past, and this may be a persistent feature with future releases as well. So if you are the type who rushes out to a showroom on the promised date of release, you may be in for some disappointment.

The MotoZine series of camera phones from Motorola is serious enough, especially given its partnership with Kodak, to give any of the Nokia/Sony/Samsung high-end models tough competition. The WiFi that featurs in many of the Motorola models is a great plus too. On the other hand, it's not clear that Motorola is pushing this further - at least it's apparent that the MP craze hasn't caught on with their marketing department, and hopefully this simply means that they are sticking to a solid feature set and improvising on features that really matter.
