The fact that Samsung is as much a popular pure digital camera manufacutrer as it is into the making of cellphones definitely gives it an edge in the market. In fact, some of Samusng's camera phone makes may be accused of being a cellphone slapped on a digital camera. A few firsts can be attributed to them - for instance, the first 5 megapixel camera phone closely followed by a 7 MP release that featured optical zoom in 2005, and presently they are all set with a 12 MP model ready for release.

The latest in camera phones from Samsung are going to have exciting new features that may just make your Nikon/Canon camera owners jealous. The most curious is the smart focus feature - you can literally put a finger on the object that you want to focus on, and be rest assured that the lens will stay focussed on the object till you decide to make contact with the shutter - even as the object moves around in the field of view! Phew, not only is this darn handy - how many digital cameras do you know that can do this for you?

Another feature that Samsung Camera Phones borrow from their pure digital camera cousins is the smart mode feature, which allows automatic updating of scene/mode (as long as you stick to the "auto" mode). Sensors built into the camera phone detect changes in lighting, distance from the object of focus, and even the nature of the background, to figure out what's the optimal shooting mode. More coolness is in store with real optical zoom - a rarity in camera phones (watch out when the specs say any-x zoom, it is usually digital zoom, quite different from, and usually inferior to, optical zoom). For instance, their latest, which is a 12MP camera phone dubbed SCH-W880, has a 3x optical zoom, a first for such a high-resolution phone. With Samsung's latest models (and the near-future releases), you can enjoy high definition photography that captures your photo, saves it, and is ready for the next in less than a couple of seconds right from your phone!

Finally, while we are at being futuristic - here's one feature to keep your eyes open for. Samsung has recently annouced a tie-up with a firm called Scanbuy. The latter is the maker of ScanLife, a barcode analyzer for mobiles. Put two and two together - you will soon be able to "scan" (by photographing, of course) barcodes into your phones internal memory and use this tidy app which will be preloaded into your Samsung make to get all the information stored in those parallel black lines. Hopefully this will open up ways of keeping track of your inventory (books come to mind instantly) in an efficient way. The tendency of Samsung to have large amounts of inbuilt memory - sometimes as much as 4GB - and the ease of using memory cards mean that you can even carry all this information around right on your phone.
